Today at a event in San Francisco, the Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom announced a new app IGTV that will begin allowing users to upload videos up to one hour. So in short Instagram is ready to compete with YouTube and a new platform for creators.
You can access IGTV in two ways. There’s a button inside the Instagram homescreen, as well as a standalone app, IGTV will show popular videos from Instagram celebrities.
“It’s time for video to move forward, and evolve,” said Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom onstage at the event. He also said “When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch. Anyone can be a creator — you can upload your own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start your own channel.”
IGTV will let anyone be a creator like youtube. People will be able to upload vertical videos through Instagram’s app. “We made it a dedicated app so you can tap on it and enjoy video without all the distraction,” Systrom explained. IGTV will also let creators to create Instagram Channels full of their different videos similar to youtube.
IGTV is different in a few ways. First, it’s built for how you actually use your phone, so videos are full screen and vertical. Also, unlike on Instagram, videos aren’t limited to one minute. Instead, each video can be up to an hour long.
No Ads For IGTV
“There’s no ads in IGTV today,” says Systrom, but he also says it’s “obviously a very reasonable place [for ads] to end up.” But in future creators can monetize their videos. Systrom also explained that since creators are investing a lot of time into IGTV videos, he wants to make that sustainable by offering them a way to monetize in the future.
